Cutting Robot

Cutting robot during test

Client
Lumetech A/S

Project
Development, design, assembly and commissioning of automatic trimming machine for fish fillets. Preparation of complete documentation.

Description
Extremely fast robot for deboning and/or portioning of fish. The fish fillets are fed via the conveyor system through the line. The cutting operation is done with water using a high-pressure water jet system. Click to see video (9.050 KB)

Cutting Device using a high pressure water jet

The speed is typically 1 second per fillet in case it is only deboned, and 1,5 to 2 seconds if the fillet is boned and portioned.
  Vision

Cutting path with deboning and portioning

Information of where to cut comes from two advanced vision systems where a UV light source illuminates the fillet in order to determine the presence of bones and fins.

The robot is able to accelerate 3 to 5 times faster than the fastest commercial robots available on the market at the time of development.

Technology
A specially developed robot with guiding as well as transmission system developed specially for the project. The special transmission system makes it possible to place the driving motors in a stationary position and save inertia.

Three degrees of freedom: X, Y as well as tilting of water jet.
Working area: 600 mm * 1.000 mm
Maximum acceleration: 160 m/s² = 16G
Static accuracy: ±0,125 mm
Dynamic accuracy: 1,5 mm (maximum acceleration and speed)

When the robot was developed hygienic conditions and speed were emphasised.

The project was awarded the JIRA Award in 1991 (for outstanding research and development in robotics).
